Frequently asked questions

The current generation arrived for 2022 with a larger 2.4-litre turbo boxer and a fully redesigned interior, so that's the car to target if outright performance and cabin tech matter most. An older, pre-2022 WRX is the budget entry point into the same all-wheel-drive formula, and the earlier boxer's head-gasket history is worth checking rather than avoiding on sight.

The Mercedes C63 AMG is the true performance rival here, at considerably more money for a V8 instead of a turbo four. The Honda Civic is far cheaper if all-wheel-drive grip isn't the priority, though our inspections find more prior body or panel repair on it than we'd expect for its class. The Toyota Corolla is the sensible, low-drama alternative at a similar entry price.

Well past 100,000 km when maintenance has kept pace with use. The WRXs we inspect here run to a median of around 115,000 km, and the turbocharged boxer and all-wheel-drive hardware are built for exactly that kind of distance under enthusiastic driving.

  • Turbocharged boxer engine for oil consumption and head-gasket seepage.
  • All-wheel-drive system for even wear across all four tyres.
  • Manual clutch feel and engagement point if fitted.
  • Modification and track-use history matched against maintenance records.

See the Subaru WRXs currently listed on CarSwitch to compare generation and condition.
